Malaya garnet — often spelled Malaia (the more gemologically correct spelling) — is a natural gem-quality garnet variety known for its unique colors ranging from pinkish-orange to reddish-orange, peach, and yellowish-orange. Its name comes from the Swahili word meaning “outcast,” because miners originally set it aside when first discovered for not fitting known garnet types.

It forms as a hybrid of pyrope and spessartine garnets, sometimes with traces of almandine and other species, giving it a distinctive palette and appeal.
